What is it we call art, as in Visual Arts? Is every painting, drawing, sculpture, photography a real work of art? Obviously that is not the case. But the definition of art seems very personal to many and there is much disagreement about it. What is art for one is not art for another. It is said that art is in the eye of the beholder, as well as beauty. But is art always beautiful? Some big pieces are far from beautiful except in the conceptualisation and creation of the piece itself. Some are regarded as expressions of genius, intellect and powerful ideas rather than beauty.
It has been said art cannot be defined; but here is my attempt to do so. Depending on your point of view, art is:
- The artist's hand at producing works of art with great skill, imagination and personal technology to communicate certain images or sculptures of ideas or actual persons, places or things, including the artist's emotional reaction to these ideas. , people, places or things, through sculpture in clay or stone, or by drawing or painting on a paper, canvas or any structure that will stand up over time.
- The actual products (works of art, such as paintings, drawings, photographs, sculptures) were produced by an artist for the purposes described above.
- Unusual attention to detail and expression, as in the art of communication.
The key to defining art is communication. Although art is not always beautiful, to be art it must communicate something to the viewer. It may be to communicate beauty, as in sensitive watercolor and flower paintings, which is often the case. Or, it could be communicating the terror of war, as in dramatic black and white photography, or the majesty of a king or queen, as in an oil portrait painting, or an idea out of this world, as in surrealism. It should leave the viewer with a sense that he or she has just had an insight into the artist's world - what the artist was thinking and feeling when he or she produced the artwork.
Many articles have been written that claim that art defies definition. Most people talk about it meaning of art. The meaning of art defies definition because it is personal to each of us. We can all look at the same artwork and draw very different conclusions from what the artist was trying to convey. We can spend hours discussing these differences and that is exactly what stimulates our interest in art. This is what art appreciation is all about: How to assess the significance of the artworks we see. We want to know what others think about that painting or that photograph or that sculpture. What do they think the artist meant? Have we reached the same conclusions? If not, why not? That is why we often think of works of art as conversation starters.
I hope I've helped some of you define art and debunk the idea of it art cannot be defined. It is defined here and in every dictionary you know! It is meaning of art that cannot be defined.
